Bursaries and Studentships

A message from the Deputy Director of Development

“One of College’s foremost priorities is to make an Oxford education available to all capable students, regardless of financial background. Learning at Jesus for undergraduates means exposure to a teaching environment which is both academically challenging and personally rewarding. Whilst for graduates it centres on accessing a broad network of individuals who help to inform and guide research. Benefitting from these should not be dependent on background and thanks to the unwavering support of alumni and friends we saw the successful completion of several appeals last year, specifically designed to safeguard our meritocratic application process.

It is with pleasure that we share the reports below and renew our sincere thanks to all those who contributed to these appeals.

Thank you!

Georgina Plunkett
Deputy Director of Development

Thank you for your support, this year and always!

Thanks to our alumni, Jesus has one of the most generous access bursary schemes in Oxford, which is distributed each year to students facing financial hardship. With government funding always at risk it is important that College is able to be as financially self-sufficient as possible. By giving to bursaries and studentships it means we can continue providing reliable support to our gifted students and uphold our commitment to fairness.

In celebration of your generosity, we are pleased to share some testimonials from our student recipients and donors below.

  • “From my role as a teaching assistant (in Logic at New College and in General Philosophy at St Hugh’s) to being one of the organizers of a very successful Graduate Conference, each experience has been profoundly enriching… Establishing meaningful personal connections and engaging in enriching experiences has made this journey all the more memorable. Whether it’s enjoying lively discussions over dinners or indulging in spirited games of table football in the MCR bunker, every moment is cherished.”

  • “Helping the younger generation to fulfil their ambitions is important for College, Oxford and society. By combining our financial support, the four donors are able to achieve significantly more than could be attempted individually. Moreover, the availability at this time of matching AHRC funds makes it a very efficient use of our funds. In addition, we gain the satisfaction of helping the aims of College and the opportunity of identifying the use of our contributions with a student who we will meet and get to know.

None of the donors are philosophers by trade! Philosophy was chosen because it is a difficult field to finance in the present economic climate. Many things are possible if we work together and we certainly need to think clearly in these trying times.”

  • “Having the chance to study a fully funded DPhil at Oxford has been a life-changing experience for me, and something I never though would have been possible!”

  • “Although it will be sad to leave Oxford this year, I will always be grateful for the incredible generosity of this bursary and the dedication of my tutors throughout the course. What stood out to me the most about College was the tremendous support available for students who do not have access to certain funding and resources.”
