The Anthony Pilkington Bursary

At the end of 2021, we launched an appeal to raise £100,000 to endow in perpetuity an undergraduate bursary in Modern Languages, in memory of Dr Anthony Pilkington. Anthony was Zeitlyn Fellow and Tutor in French Language and Literature at Jesus from 1966–2005, and also served “wholly effectively and with quiet grace” as Acting Principal during Sir Peter North’s Vice-Chancellorship of the University from 1993-97 (as recorded in the College history, Jesus College: The First 450 Years). During his long service to College, he touched innumerable lives, both of those language students in his charge and the wider College community.

Thanks to the support of linguists and non-linguists alike we reached our target of £100,000 to endow the bursary and welcomed the first recipient last academic year. Most touchingly, the success of this appeal illustrated the profound affection and respect held for Anthony by both alumni and the College Fellowship. We are indebted to Bob Yates (1965) and Tom Brown (1975) for initiating the Bursary appeal and for driving forward approaches to their peers and friends, and to all those who chose to make a gift. The successful completion of this appeal is both a remarkable achievement in its result and a fitting legacy to an admired and respected man.

Thanks to you, in Michaelmas Term 2024, we welcomed the second recipients of the Anthony Pilkington Bursary.

“Although it will be sad to leave Oxford this year, I will always be grateful for the incredible generosity of this bursary and the dedication of my tutors throughout the course. What stood out to me the most about College was the tremendous support available for students who do not have access to certain funding and resources.”
