The Dr John and Frances Walsh Undergraduate Bursary in History
In the spring of 2023, we contacted all alumni from Dr John Walsh’s vintage, historians and non-historians alike, as well as to John’s colleagues in the Fellowship with the hope of raising support for a new means-tested undergraduate bursary in History at Jesus in his memory.
In just three months after the launch, the Dr John and Frances Walsh Undergraduate Bursary in History appeal raised the £100,000 needed to endow the bursary in perpetuity. The show of support didn’t stop there and thanks to the continued generosity of alumni we were able to create two additional spend-down graduate studentships in History: the Walsh – Clarendon PGT in History and the Walsh – Scott MSt in History.
We are so grateful to all who contributed towards the Dr John and Frances Walsh Undergraduate Bursary in History and the two additional studentships. All are testament to John’s academic reputation and popularity and will remain a fitting legacy for the years to come.
Dr Alex Lumbers, Academic Director and Fellow, says: “I am delighted by this support for history undergraduates and postgraduates, which comes at a time when the humanities continue to be under pressure, and helps to ensure that students can study History regardless of their background. It is also a fitting tribute to both John Walsh and Hamish Scott who were so involved with our students, and provided invaluable support.”
Thanks to you, in Michaelmas Term 2023, we welcomed the first Dr John and Frances Walsh Undergraduate Bursary in History recipient.
“The Bursary has helped me immensely as it has allowed me to gain access to books and texts suited to my historical interest allowing me to fulfil my full academic potential. I have also recently been made secretary of the Jesus College History society and I look forward to planning events for the Society. Thank you for supporting my studies at Jesus, I am so grateful for the opportunities I have been given.”

As a Tutorial Fellow, Dr John Walsh was outstanding. His courteous concern for all of his students was always paramount. Former undergraduate historians credit him with opening their minds to new ways of thinking about History and the world, and it was well known that he was a meticulous supervisor of his graduate students. Jesus College has published a booklet featuring tributes from across the College community, which you can view here.
